WINNEMUCCA —Humboldt Volunteer Hospice is going green with a new recycling program. The local nonprofit is now accepting donations of aluminum cans at its 705 E. Fourth Street office.
The money hospice earns from the cans will help the organization honor and support individuals in our community who are suffering from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness.
“This is just a win-win proposition for us and for the community,” said Humboldt Volunteer Hospice Executive Director Mary Orr. “As a community we need a good place to recycle our cans, and as an organization, we need the cash that will come from these cans, so we are looking forward to a mutually beneficial relationship.”
Those wishing to donate cans should place them in the marked receptacles located in front of the fence on the north side of the JOIN building. Please do not put cans in the dumpster. Also, please do not crush cans as it will damage the machinery used to prepare them for recycling.
If it is more convenient, residents may call hospice to schedule a pickup of cans.
“We’ll do anything to get people’s cans off their hands,” said Orr. “We’ll even come bag them if people have a lot.”
Orr suggested that businesses, organizations and schools that don’t currently recycle their cans establish a plan to do so. “We would be happy to schedule a routine pickup,” said Orr. “We want to make it as easy as possible.”
Orr said the local nonprofit was recently notified that the United Way of the Great Basin, its primary funder, has experienced a severe funding setback, which will manifest in a dramatic drop in hospice’s annual grant.
“This is something simple we can do to try to offset some of that loss,” said Orr.
She added, “We hope local residents will step forward to help us keep our community green and help our organization continue to serve those in need.”
