WINNEMUCCA.—Looking for a great bargain? The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice has just the thing for you!
The local nonprofit organization will celebrate the grand opening of its “Frugal Flamingo Thrift Shop” this Saturday, June 19, at 720 E. 4th Street, formerly the site of Miller Antiques.
Humboldt Volunteer Hospice Executive Director Mary Orr said her group was recently notified that the United Way of the Great Basin, its primary funder, has experienced a severe funding setback, which will manifest in a dramatic drop in hospice’s annual grant.
“As we contemplated what we might do to raise funds,” said Orr, “we mentioned to a few people that we might consider opening a thrift shop.”
Orr said within days, donations began pouring through the nonprofit’s doors. She laughed, “So we decided to go ahead and open a thrift shop.”
Orr said that kind of generosity has been a hallmark of her organization. “This community is not going to allow their chronically and terminally ill friends and neighbors to go uncared for,” she said. “This community has really stepped up to ensure that we have the resources we need to move forward with our mission.”
She added, “We’re hoping that support will continue as we open this thrift shop.”
