WINNEMUCCA, Nev.— The first parade of summer will take place this weekend down Winnemucca Boulevard.
The Winnemucca Basque Parade is just one part of the fun planned for the 32nd annual Winnemucca Basque Festival, which will take place Saturday and Sunday, June 13-14.
The weekend also will include other favorites such as games of strength and endurance at the Winnemucca Convention Center, a Basque-themed mass, the traditional sheepherder’s picnic and Saturday night’s popular dance. A traditional Basque breakfast will follow Sunday morning.
Saturday’s parade will kick off the annual culture fest beginning at 10 a.m. Opening ceremonies will take place at 11 a.m. at the Winnemucca Convention Center followed by performances and contests from 11:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.
From 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., a festival favorite—the traditional sheepherder’s picnic—will be served up on the convention center lawn. Locals and out-of-towners can enjoy tri-tip steak, lamb stew, salad, beans, bread and dessert. Cost is $17 per person; children 12 and under
eat for $10. Traditional Basque chorizos also will be available for $3 each.
Following at 9 p.m., the convention center will be transformed into a dance hall with the group, “Auditory Sensations.” Cover fee for the evening is $6 for adults; children 5 and under get in free.
The following morning at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 13, a Basque-themed mass will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church under the direction of a visiting bishop.
A traditional Basque breakfast will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Winnemucca Convention Center. For $12 per person, the Winnemucca Basque Club will cook and serve up chorizos, ham, morcillas (blood sausage), mashed potatoes, fried eggs and French bread while local Basque dance groups provide the morning’s entertainment.
