WINNEMUCCA — When it comes to riding ATVs we’ve all said it – it’s just a quick trip to my friends, it’s just riding around camp, we’ll be extra careful. While this may all be true, accidents are called accidents for a reason. You can’t control other ATV riders, you can’t control a low-hanging branch, and you can’t control a blown tire. Some things are out of our hands and the easiest way to get some of that control back is wearing a helmet. Nevada Outdoor School is hosting ATV Rider Camp for youth ages 6 to 15 the week of August 2nd.
ATV Rider Camp will help youth become more confident and capable on ATVs. There are hands-on activities planned to explore Tread Lightly! ethics, learn safe riding habits, discover basic first aid, and earn an ATV safety certificate.
We’ll have hands-on activities Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 8 to noon at Great Basin College. Participants will get a chance to explore an ATV with Jeff Thompson from Ravenswood and learn the basic parts and maintenance. Sonoma Cycle will be there to help participants find the perfect ATV, and why FIT is so important for age and size. Curt Booher from the BLM will help participants be safe by practicing basic first aid.
Wednesday and Thursday are our Rider Course days at the sand dunes, where we’ll put into action the things we’ve learned. Participants will bring their appropriate-sized ATVs for a day on the course to earn their safety certificate. Ages 12-15 will ride on Wednesday and ages 6-11 will ride on Thursday; these days will run from 8 to 1pm.
