WINNEMUCCA — The city is a step closer to having a new public safety building. On Thursday (Aug. 26), the Winnemucca City Council opened bids for the retrofit of the American Car Collection building – future home of the Winnemucca Police Department.
According to City Manager Steve West, there were eight bids from general contractors ranging from the low bid of $675,000 to a high bid of $947,471. The low bid came from Bison Construction out of Carson City. West said no local general contractors bid on the project.
The city council will award the contract at their September meeting. Construction must start two-three weeks after the bid is awarded and will take an estimated five months to complete, West said.
The retrofit will turn what was supposed to have been a car museum into a police station. Three of the four vehicle bays will be turned into office spaces, meeting rooms, and a locker room for the police officers.
The police department has always shared space with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at the County Courthouse. However, the two departments have expanded over the years and that’s no longer convenient for either department.
The city has been tucking money away for about ten years against the day when they would have to build a police station. When the developer of the American Car Collection offered the entire property plus two buildings for $700,000 – it was to good of a deal to pass up.
The site of the new Winnemucca Police Department is on W. Winnemucca Blvd. at the E. Winnemucca Blvd. turnoff.
