WINNEMUCCA —Area cooks are invited to set tongues aflutter next month in one of Humboldt County’s most picturesque locations. The annual Paradise Valley Chili Cook-Off will take to the streets of the tiny hamlet located about 40 miles north of Winnemucca on Saturday, September 11.
The 21st annual event was begun by Humboldt County mines who saw the competition as a fun way to build bonds of friendship and commerce. But when mine support was pulled from the event several years ago, the Paradise Valley Community Board decided to sponsor the event. This year they’ve added salsa to the menu and the group is hoping for continued success.
Each four-person team can opt to serve up chili with beans, chili without beans or salsa. Cost is $50 to compete in one category, $75 for two and $100 for all three.
Area community groups, civic organizations, churches, political types, businesses and families better hurry, though. They only have until Wednesday, September 1, to stake their culinary claim. After that, they’ll be sampling, not cooking.
There are some new rules in place for judging this year, too. Teams only will compete for “People’s Choice” honors. Cost to vote is $1 per ticket; each person may only vote once.
Of course, community residents are invited to enjoy plenty of cooking samples throughout the morning and afternoon. Vendors also will be on site selling their wares and services.
